Once a year we can look forward to visiting local museums at no cost on Free Museum Day, sponsored by the Smithsonian Institute. Years ago when I lived in Washington DC I took for granted that all the wonderful Smithsonian museums were absolutely free to visit. When we moved to another city, I was shocked that it could cost over $30 for my family of four to visit a local museum.
Now we always buy a regional coupon book that has "buy one, get one free" admission coupons for many of the best local museums and attractions. We use these when we have out of town visitors, as well. If we plan to visit a museum more than once a year, we buy the family pass which always pays for itself after one or two visits. The family passes also include additional benefits like free guest passes and museum store discounts. I also subscribe to the email newsletter for our local bowling alley and regularly receive coupons for free and discounted bowling.
But the best bargain of the year is Free Museum Day on a Saturday in September. Do a Google search for this year's current date. You can download your free admission card directly from this link. Check the list of participating museums in your city and treat yourself to an inexpensive day of entertainment, with education and a little culture thrown in as well!
