5 Ways to Save on Organic Food

1. Compare store brand organics’ prices at your local stores:  Check out the store brands in the organic department and compare prices between stores to find the best deals.  Most supermarkets have store brand organic items, Whole Foods has an extensive line of store brand items, and even wholesale clubs and discount big box stores have organic produce and grocery items. Store brand organic items’ prices may be no more expensive than name brand conventional items.

2. Learn the “Clean 15” and the “Dirty Dozen.” The Environmental Working Group, a non-profit public health advocacy group, provides a free Pesticides in Produce Shopping Guide (ewg.org). Download the list or the app to see which items contain the least and the most pesticide residue. I stretch my dollar by selectively purchasing organic versions of the “Clean 15” such as onions, avocados, sweet corn, asparagus, cabbage, broccoli, watermelon and purchase conventional versions of the “Dirty Dozen” which includes apples, strawberries and grapes.

3. Shop the bulk Department. Stores provide containers and let you scoop out the perfect amount of an item that you desire to purchase. Look for organic beans, teas, grains, flour, oatmeal, or spices to buy this way and you are less likely to waste food. Don’t assume every item in bulk is cheaper, bring your calculator and compare prices by the ounce or pound to pre-packed items.

4. Use Coupons. Check the Sunday newspaper circulars and printable coupon sites for many organic brands.  Pick up in-store coupon booklets, such as Whole Foods’ booklet or print the coupons from the Whole Foods website. Check out manufacturers websites for organic brands. We found printable coupons at more than 50 organic online sites.  You can also  send an email request via organic manufacturers websites and ask if they have coupons that they can mail to you.  We received dozens of great coupons with that simple strategy, delivered to our home.

5. Grow your own savings. Nothing beats the price – and the taste- of a tomato you harvest from your own backyard or even your deck. Short on space? Purchase cheap plant containers at garage sales or flea markets. You can also make your own container out of old buckets, jars, plastic trash containers, ceramic pots, or other cleaned containers you have around the home. Growing staples like lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and herbs can provide the most bang for your buck.

*5* Ways to Stop Throwing Money Down the Drain

According to USDA studies, 10% to 40% of a family’s grocery spending is wasted by having to throw away unused food.  Avoid throwing your money down the drain by working to reduce waste to zero.   It’s easier than you think with these strategies:

1.     Serve reasonable portions to children.  Serving small portions to young children is often the best way for them to learn to eat only until satisfied, instead of overeating. Start kids off with less and encourage them to ask for more if they’re still hungry.

2.     Serve leftovers one night a week-It’s a free meal!  Everyone doesn’t have to have the same thing, and you don’t have to call it “leftovers.”  When my children were  young we called it “crazy dinner” and they loved it.

3.     Designate one refrigerator shelf with clear containers of leftovers.  Good food won’t get lost in the back of the frig.

4.     Eat last night’s dinner for lunch.  If you regularly brown bag your lunch, you probably get tired of sandwiches. Why not bring your leftovers from dinner for lunch? Watch your coworkers drool as they eat their bologna sandwiches.

5.     Think creatively when reusing leftovers, and create menu plans with leftovers and perishables in mind.  Leftover veggies become a healthy salad.  Leftover chicken or beef has a second life in soup.  Make sure you plan to eat your perishable foods before they go bad, don’t let them go to waste!
