{"id":35494,"date":"2016-02-29T11:18:18","date_gmt":"2016-02-29T16:18:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.couponmom.com\/blog\/?p=35494"},"modified":"2016-02-29T11:21:15","modified_gmt":"2016-02-29T16:21:15","slug":"how-to-fight-skyrocketing-grocery-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.couponmom.com\/blog\/how-to-fight-skyrocketing-grocery-prices","title":{"rendered":"How to Fight Skyrocketing Grocery Prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\ngoogle_ad_client = \"pub-1292841733033310\";\n\/* 300x250, created 6\/7\/10 *\/\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"4136095358\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 300;\ngoogle_ad_height = 250;\n\/\/-->\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"\nsrc=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/247wallst.com\/special-report\/2016\/02\/22\/groceries-driving-up-your-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">A recent study<\/a> using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that grocery prices have increased 31% over the past 10 years, with the highest increases on some of the most common household items like eggs, ground beef, fish, rice, pasta, apples and more. \u00a0Although we can&#8217;t stop price increases, we can shop more strategically to pay prices that are lower than average to save our grocery budgets. \u00a0How to save on these items?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Save on eggs:<\/strong> \u00a0Compare prices of eggs at various types of stores. \u00a0You may find that a discount store like Aldi or Save A Lot have much lower prices than your supermarket. \u00a0Make an extra stop twice a month and buy the eggs with the latest sell-by date and store them in the coldest part of the refrigerator (which is the back, NOT the door).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Save on ground beef:<\/strong> \u00a0Shop sales and buy the larger family packages. \u00a0Break large packages into smaller portions and freeze for future weeks. \u00a0Only buy high-ticket freezable items like beef, poultry and pork when your store features it as a half-price sale item to save hundreds of dollars over the course of the year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Save on fish:<\/strong> \u00a0Compare prices for the least-expensive form of your favorite fish. \u00a0I buy flash frozen salmon, which is also more convenient since I can thaw a piece easily rather than making a special trip to the store to buy fresh fish on the day I need it. \u00a0Frozen fish is also great for portion control so I&#8217;m eating a reasonable portion (5 to 6 ounces) rather than the weight from the fish counter that is always slightly higher than I requested!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Save on rice and pasta:<\/strong> \u00a0Watch for coupons available for several brands of rice and pasta and stock up when these brands go on sale. \u00a0Supermarkets tend to put these items on sale very often so there&#8217;s no reason to ever pay full price here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Save on apples: \u00a0<\/strong>Again, there is a wide range of prices for apples depending on the variety and the size apple you purchase. \u00a0For lower cost-per-apple and for portion control, compare the cost of bagged apples as compared to buying individual apples by the pound.
